Storm-Season Electrical Prep for the Peninsula

Storm-Season Electrical Prep for the Peninsula

The Central Coast gets its share of wild weather, and storms are hard on home electrical systems, power surges, outages, and the occasional lightning strike nearby. A bit of preparation before storm season helps protect your home and the appliances in it, and it's worth knowing what's in your control.

Power surges and your appliances

When the grid is hit by a surge, from a nearby strike, a fault, or power coming back after an outage, that spike can travel into your home and damage sensitive electronics: TVs, computers, fridges, solar inverters and the like. Surge protection at the switchboard helps clamp those spikes before they reach your circuits, and point-of-use protection adds another layer for valuable gear. It's a relatively small thing that can save expensive replacements.

What's worth checking before the season

That your switchboard is in good condition with working safety switches.

Whether surge protection is fitted, particularly if you have solar or a lot of electronics.

Outdoor fittings and points that are exposed to driving rain.

That you know where your main switch is and how to safely turn power off if needed.

After an outage

When power returns after an outage, the surge as everything switches back on is itself a risk, it's why some appliances fail right when the lights come back. If you've lost power, switching off sensitive appliances at the wall until supply is stable and steady is a simple precaution. If your solar shut down during the outage, it should restart on its own once the grid is back; if it doesn't, that's worth a look.

A quick pre-season check of the board and surge protection is cheap insurance for a coastal home. If you'd like your Umina or Ettalong place looked over before the storms, we're happy to help.
